Rising from the Ashes: Kasandra Murray An Artist’s Journey Kasandra Murray is a Columbus, Ohio-based artist who creates “messy art” that celebrates imperfection and life’s unexpected moments. Her artistic philosophy grew from personal challenges, including a totaled car, apartment fire, and period of homelessness, which taught her to embrace life’s curve-balls. Murray works primarily in graphite and acrylic on board, creating modern Impressionist paintings with visible brushstrokes and photo- realistic graphite drawings. Murray graduated from Columbus College of Art and Design in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in Illustration. She worked for over a decade at Fraga Graphic Solutions as Senior Advisor and Creative Manager, leading a team of 10 people. In September 2024, she started her own business, Unlucky Umbrella Studio, offering graphic design, marketing, and operations consulting while continuing her traditional art practice on weekends and evenings. Canvas to Career Currently, Murray is building her collection for future gallery events while sharing her work online through Instagram. She received the Dean’s Scholarship in 2009 and continues to develop her artistic voice through experimentation with mixed media. Her approach emphasizes embracing the unexpected and finding beauty in imperfection, making her work both personal and relatable to viewers who appreciate authentic, unpolished artistic expression.
