Who is The Scribe's Mascot?

Seshat is an ancient Egyptian goddess of wisdom, knowledge, and writing. She appears as a woman wearing a distinctive headdress featuring a seven-pointed star or flower and what resembles horns or antlers. As the divine scribe and record-keeper, Seshat fulfills several important roles in Egyptian mythology.

She serves as the goddess of writing, record keeping, accounting, and mathematics, making her the patron of scribes, libraries, and archives. Seshat is considered the inventor of writing and is responsible for recording the reigns of pharaohs and their achievements.

Dan Cleary: Ohio's Hidden Beauty

Finding Memories

Dan Cleary is a fine art photographer whose work reveals the quiet grandeur of overlooked places and moments. Based in Dayton, Ohio, Cleary has spent decades capturing the evolving landscapes of the American Midwest, blending emotional resonance with technical precision. With an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and over 40 years of experience, Cleary approaches photography not merely as a means to document the world, but rather as a way to interpret it, seeking rhythm, mood, and memory within each frame.

Contemplating the Past and Present

One of his most acclaimed projects, Wright Brothers: Then and Now, embodies his layered approach to visual storytelling. In this series, Cleary juxtaposes historic photographs from the Wright Brothers' archives with his own contemporary images taken from the same vantage points. Through this technique, he bridges past and present, revealing how invention, persistence, and the passage of time leave their imprint on both the land and the human imagination. The series serves as a tribute to Dayton's legacy of innovation and a reflection on how photography can preserve, and reframe, history.

Cleary's fine art portfolio also includes a rich collection of Midwest landscapes, nature studies, and abstract compositions that lean into subtlety and stillness. He is particularly drawn to the textures of natural environments, the pattern of water, or the glowing hues of dawn stretching across open skies. His images are carefully composed but never overworked.

His photography artwork is displayed in galleries, hospitals, and corporate collections throughout the region. Dan's photographs reflect a deep commitment to place, memory, and transformation, and offer an enduring invitation to see the beauty in what's often passed by. Inside Infinite Images: A New Kind of Art Experience

Now open at the Toledo Museum of Art, Infinite Images: The Art of Algorithms traces how artists have used code, systems, and repetition to create visual art from the 1960s to today. Featuring over 50 works by 24 artists, from early innovators like Josef Albers and Vera Molnár to contemporary figures like Tyler Hobbs and Sarah Meyohas, the exhibition reveals a long history of digital experimentation.

The show runs through November 30 and is supported by loans from private collections and funding from sponsors Susan and Tom Palmer, Taylor Automotive Family, Dana, Blackdove, and the Ohio Arts Council.

Technology Meets Creativity

Infinite Images explores how digital tools shape both the creation and experience of contemporary art. Some works are interactive, including a plotter machine that draws algorithm-based images live in the gallery and a sound sculpture by OxDeafbeef that responds to physical controls. These pieces invite visitors to explore the concepts behind the work, revealing how artists use systems and code not only to generate images but to build new ways of connecting with audiences. Across the exhibition, technology is treated not just as a tool, but as an essential part of artistic thinking, process, and expression.

Perrysburg's Outdoor Sculpture Walk of 2024

A Park Transformed by Public Art

The 2024-2025 Perrysburg Sculpture Walk brought large-scale outdoor art to Woodlands Park, featuring thirteen works by nationally known artists installed along the park's perimeter and entry. Curated by Robin Ballmer of Main ART-ery and installed with support from Mike Sohikian and Southeastern Equipment Rental, the juried exhibition is free and open to the public through August 24. Next year's Sculpture Walk begins on September 1.

Support is provided by Visit Perrysburg, the City of Perrysburg, Carla and Rich Brundrett, Sylvania Graphics, Skyworks Equipment Rental, and additional contributors including Way Public Library, Perrysburg Chamber of Commerce, Image360, and Toledo.com.

Shifting Light, Lasting Impressions

Sculptures in the exhibition feature materials such as bronze, carved wood, salvaged steel, glass mosaic, and polished or polymer, each chosen to enhance texture and form. Styles range from whimsical and abstract to narrative and representational, offering new ways for visitors to connect with the work. Art can be viewed on foot or by car, and at day or night, giving each piece a new visual presence. Curator- led tours are available by appointment through Robin Ballmer and provide insight into the artists, their materials, and the challenges of installing large works in public space.

Debra Buchanan: Life as her Art

Light and Color

Debra Buchanan is a contemporary artist working in multi mediums. She was born, raised, and is currently residing in East Toledo, Ohio. Debra was awarded a scholarship to Columbus College of Art and Design where she received her formal training earning a BFA, studied in Europe for a summer, and went on to earn a Master's in Education at Bowling Green State University. While there, she was fortunate enough to study painting with world renown artist Patrick Bétandier, founder of the Atelier Neo-Medici in France. Her work under the guidance of Patrick became the catalyst for her style of painting today, unifying a painting with a veil of luminescent light refracted through layers of transparent colors.

Traditions Reimagined

Debra's Keen observational skill, attention to detail and compositional acumen infuses her work with aesthetic ingenuity. Exquisite rendering is the hallmark of this accomplished artist. Whether in oils, pastel, graphite or charcoal, her technique is extraordinary. She ardently carries on the still life and portrait traditions established by seventeenth century masters imbuing her own modern spin into her work.

Buchanan has earned an abundance of distinctions and awards nationally, regionally and locally. Debra is a member of the Portrait Society of America and represented by The Toledo Museum of Art's, Collector's Corner Gallery in Toledo, Ohio. Her design concepts, in collaboration with glass mosaic artist Gail Christofferson were featured nationwide in numerous hospitals, buildings and in corporate collections including Facebook.

About Julie

Julie Sheil is a self-taught artist who lives in Cleveland, Ohio. She started making art in 2021 as a way to help herself heal after a serious car accident that caused a brain injury and balance problems. Julie creates abstract paintings without planning them ahead of time. Instead, she explores her inner thoughts and feelings, connecting with the changing world around her. She builds each artwork in layers, mixing playful creativity with careful choices about what works best.

Art and Inspiration

Julie's main inspiration comes from her love of nature and her personal journey of becoming disabled and working to get better. While she's mainly a painter, Julie creates many different types of art. Her work includes abstract collage pieces, mixed media art, eco prints (art made using natural materials), functional art that people can use in their daily lives, and custom pet portraits for clients. This variety shows how she embraces being an artist in many different ways.

Cydnie King: Natural Connections

From Technology to Botanicals

Cydnie L. King was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri to a family of artists. After graduating from Webster University in 2012 with a BA in Studio Art, she moved to Fairborn, Ohio in 2014 where she currently lives with her husband, son, daughter and dog. Her work is also featured in several private and public collections across the Midwest, including The University of Dayton.

Where Her Art Lives Now

Cydnie presently works for The Contemporary Dayton (The CO) as their Curatorial Assistant. She has been part of several exhibitions in Ohio and solo exhibitions at the Terry Lynn Studio and Gallery in Fairborn, The Betty at Front Street and the African American Visual Artists Guild (AAVAG) in Dayton, Ohio.

Her latest solo exhibition, “New Work & Explorations,” was featured at The Betty on Front Street in October 2024. Cydnie is currently participating in “Crosstown Connection,” a group show combining two Dayton arts organizations, Dayton Society of Artists and AAVAG into one exhibition running through August 2025.

Circuits, Color, and Creative Pulse

Cydnie’s main body of work explores the connection between humanity and nature by using bright colors to portray the androgynous figures and technological circuits physically attached to botanicals. She works with inks, pastels, color pencils and charcoals because she likes the fluidity of each medium together and the saturation of colors that help emphasize the power of the images she creates.

Patty's Dance of Abstraction

Patty Flauto's Creative Path

Patty Flauto is a contemporary abstract painter and art educator based in Rocky River, Ohio. Her artistic practice centers on exploring the question "Is it possible to discern real from not real?" This curiosity drives her abstract work, where she finds beauty in finding her way through a painting, but in discovering the joy of getting lost within it.

Her paintings are built from perceptual landscapes, combining geometric and organic shapes found in nature. Using quick-drying acrylics, she creates layered compositions that collide and hang in balance, leading to unexpected outcomes. Dissonance is important in her work, explored through infinite variations. The textured, layered surfaces reflect her extensive background in textiles and patterns from her career as a Creative Director in product design. Patty holds an M.F.A. in Fiber Arts from Kent State University and a B.F.A. from Youngstown State University. She has studied at prestigious institutions including the Arts Students League of New York, Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Woodstock School of Art. As an educator, she has taught color and design courses both nationally and internationally, including at the Cleveland Museum of Art and American Greetings Shanghai Studios in China.

A Distinguished Career

Patty's work has gained national recognition through exhibitions at major institutions including The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Butler Institute of American Art, and The McDonough Museum. She is an elected member of the Artists Archives of American and serves on the boards of Artists Archives of the Western Reserve and the Contemporary Art Society Affinity Group at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Her recent achievements include a Silver Award at the 2025 All Abstract exhibition in Scottsdale, Arizona, and a Best in Show Platinum Award at the 2022 All Abstracts exhibition in Scottsdale, Arizona. Her work appears in corporate collections including American Greetings, TransDigm Group, Wells Fargo Advisors, and The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Cleveland.

Sculpting Myth: The Art of Aric Jorn

Myth to Modern: A Norse Artist's Journey

Aric Jorn blends his passion for history with storytelling through sculptures that bring Norse mythology to life. His work focuses on the myths and legends of the Norse people, aiming to clear up common misconceptions. Every piece starts with careful research, then gets transformed through his unique artistic style to show how these ancient stories still matter today. He wants his art to spark curiosity about the past and encourage people to dig deeper into history.

Recognition and Techniques

Art collectors recognize Aric for his detailed "layered reliefs" and intricate standalone sculptures. His Mini Myth Collection features over 80 small figures, each standing two to three inches tall and representing Norse gods, heroes, or mythical creatures. His newest work, Viking Artifacts, shows reliefs of Viking Age weapons like decorated swords, spears, and axes that look like fresh archaeological discoveries.

Though he studied illustration and art history in college, Aric taught himself sculpture after opening his studio in 2015. His work has gained attention through interviews with Norse experts, PBS features, and a major commission from Viking® for an international media event.

Rising from the Ashes: Kasandra Murray

An Artist's Journey

Kasandra Murray is a Columbus, Ohio-based artist who creates "messy art" that celebrates imperfection and life's unexpected moments. Her artistic philosophy grew from personal challenges, including a totaled car, apartment fire, and period of homelessness, since life's curve-balls. Murray works primarily in graphite and acrylic on board, creating modern Impressionist paintings with visible brushstrokes and photo-realistic graphite drawings.

Murray graduated from Columbus College of Art and Design in 2013 with a Bachelor of Art in Illustration. She worked for over a decade at Fraga Graphic Solutions as Senior Advisor and Creative Manager, leading a team of 10 people. In September 2024, she started her own business, Unlucky Umbrella Studio, offering graphic design, marketing, and operations consulting while continuing her traditional art practice on weekends and evenings.

Canvas to Career

Currently, Murray is building her collection for future gallery events while sharing her work online through Instagram. She received the Dean's Scholarship in 2009 and continues to develop her artistic voice through experimentation with mixed media. Her approach emphasizes embracing the unexpected and finding beauty in imperfection, making her work both personal and relatable to viewers who appreciate authentic, unpolished artistic expression.

Clothing to Canvas: Elizabeth Ward

Clothing Design...

Elizabeth Ward (she/her) is a painter based in Columbus, Ohio, working primarily in acrylic and oil. With a background in apparel design and nearly a decade spent designing clothing out of state, Elizabeth returned to her hometown to be closer to family, she found herself picking up a paintbrush to stay creatively charged. Her paintings mix surrealism with a strong sense of humor, often drawing from the small absurdities of everyday life. Working from her Columbus studio, Elizabeth approaches each canvas with the same attention to texture, color, and form that guided her work in fashion design.

...To Quirky Twists...

Much of her inspiration comes from music, misheard lyrics, and misunderstood phrases, things that strike her as funny and spark a visual twist. This offbeat lens gives her work a playful, sometimes dreamlike quality, where nothing is quite what it seems but everything feels oddly familiar. Elizabeth's artistic process involves careful observation of the mundane moments that most people overlook. Whether it's a phrase turned literal or a strange mashup of ideas, her pieces invite a second look (and usually a smile).

...To Hometown Smiles

Elizabeth is currently a resident artist at High Road Gallery in Worthington, Ohio. She's shown her work at Not Your Mama's Craft Market, Birch Boutique pop-ups, and was featured in the Big Local Arts Village at the Columbus Arts Festival. Through her art, she's found a new way to tell stories; this time not on fabric, but on canvas.

Tracy Meagher's Ticket to Art

Life-Changing Discovery

Tracy Meagher is a mixed media digital collage artist and founding member of the Artist Studio at Kamp Kilmer, an online art community. Her artistic journey began in an unexpected way - with a free movie ticket to see Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. Seeing Val Kilmer in that film led her to discover his online art community, Kamp Kilmer, which completely changed her life. It was there that Tracy first realized she was an artist, thanks to the encouragement and support she received from the community. She believes this discovery was meant to happen, especially during a very difficult time in her life.

Art as Therapy and Moving Forward

After losing her mother in February 2021 and dealing with her own health problems for years, Tracy found herself at a breaking point. Art became the therapy she didn't know she needed. While creating a piece to honor her mother, she realized she was finally moving forward with her life. One particularly meaningful artwork featured a ballerina, which helped her see her mother's death as a new beginning rather than just an ending. Though Val Kilmer passed away on April 1, 2025, Tracy hopes he knew the positive impact Kamp Kilmer had on her and many others. From Healing to High-Profile Shows

Her art has gained significant recognition through numerous exhibitions, starting with Art Basel Miami in December 2022. She has been featured in major shows including the "115 Best Digital Artists of Our Generation" exhibit at The Oculus in New York's World Trade Center, where her work was also published in an exclusive art book. Other notable exhibitions include the AWEDACITY Virtual Women's Empowerment Summit, various mental health awareness shows, and galleries in Brooklyn and New York. Her work has been displayed in both physical and virtual spaces. She continues to participate in collage challenges on Instagram and finds joy in creating art that helps her heal and grow.

Who is "The Head"?

Atum was one of the most important creator gods in ancient Egyptian mythology, particularly in the religious center of Heliopolis. According to Egyptian creation myths, Atum emerged from the primordial waters of chaos, called Nun, as the first divine being. He was believed to have created himself through his own will and power, earning him the title "the self-created one." As the first god, Atum then created the next generation of deities by producing Shu (god of air) and Tefnut (goddess of moisture) from his own body, either through spitting, sneezing, or other bodily acts depending on the version of the myth. These two gods then gave birth to Geb (earth) and Nut (sky), continuing the divine family tree.

Atum was often depicted as a man wearing the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt, symbolizing his role as a universal ruler.
