John Ford’s Cavalry Trilogy, Part 2
Scout Tafoya introduces
USA, 1949, John Ford
The second film in John Ford’s “Cavalry Trilogy” is the only one in color—and it’s gorgeous, winning an Oscar for its cinematography. John Wayne plays a soon-to-retire Cavalry captain at a frontier outpost where he must try to suppress a brewing Native American uprising in the wake of Custer’s defeat. This elegiac classic was shot in Monument Valley with a look inspired by the paintings of Frederic Remington. The film will be introduced by film scholar Scout Tafoya, who will sell and sign copies of his book But God Made Him a Poet: Watching John Ford in the 21st Century (With an X Books, 2023) after the screening. 35mm. 103 min. Special admission $14; members, CIA/CSU I.D. holders, age 25 & under $11; no passes. Thanks to Jon Nix. (Source: ohio.org)
