About The Scribe

What is The Scribe newspaper?

The Scribe is Ohio's statewide arts publication, produced by 501(c)(3) Apollo Press. We publish Ohio artists at no cost. Every featured artist gets professional exposure they could not otherwise afford.

Since March 2024, we have published 175 artists and distributed 4,000 copies monthly to libraries, galleries, and cafes across Ohio.

Artists can submit their work for consideration in our monthly editions.

Arts organizations interested in partnership opportunities can contact us directly.

Who runs The Scribe, and what is its mission?

The Scribe is published by Apollo Press, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Northwood, Ohio.

Each edition is created by Jeffrey Darah and Dylan Sarieh, with help from volunteers.

Our mission: remove barriers to visibility for Ohio artists. We publish them for free and put copies in community locations where readers find us without needing internet access or social media.

How often is The Scribe published?

The Scribe is published once per month, on the 1st of each month.

What is the current circulation of The Scribe?

The Scribe is currently stocked at 200+ locations across 4,000 copies.

Submitting Your Work

I only make art in X/Y/Z medium, can I still be featured?

YES! We take nearly all formats of art. Ohio artists from all backgrounds and walks of life are encouraged to share their story and get in touch with us.

Does The Scribe accept submissions from Ohio natives who no longer live in the state?

Yes! The Scribe accepts submissions from artists currently living in Ohio, or those born in Ohio with an ongoing connection to the state.

How are submissions evaluated? Is there a review process or are all submissions accepted?

Submissions are evaluated on several factors, but ultimately are up to the discretion of The Scribe staff. Submissions should be family-friendly as The Scribe is stocked in many branch libraries.

Does The Scribe have a freelance writing program?

Yes, we are always looking for more content.

What is the typical timeline from submission to publication?

Content submissions from artists must be submitted before the third friday of each month. If you have submitted and are accepted, your submission will be available in the next month's edition.

Is there a word count or size limit for different types of submissions?

In general there is no size limit for pictures, please send us full resolution images with no watermarks on them.

Word count for stories should be around 400-600 words.

Reading & Distribution

Can readers request physical copies to be mailed to them?

Yes, though you must be subscribed to The Scribe to receive mailed copies. Featured artists may request to have 5 copies sent to them for friends and family!

How can local businesses become distribution points for the newspaper?

As a distribution partner, you put The Scribe in front of people who care about art. We ask that you place copies in a visible spot for patrons to pick up.

For locations requiring over 50 copies monthly, we have a cost-sharing program to support operational expenses.
