About The Scribe

The Scribe is Ohio's statewide arts newspaper, published by Apollo Press, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We publish Ohio artists at no cost and distribute free copies to community locations statewide.

Our Mission

The Scribe provides free arts journalism to Ohio communities. We publish artists who cannot afford advertising, distribute to locations where readers discover us organically, and document Ohio's creative work for future generations.

The Problem We Address

Ohio artists, particularly those outside major metros, face significant barriers to visibility. Commercial publications prioritize paying advertisers. Social media algorithms favor accounts with existing followings. Artists without marketing budgets or large online audiences struggle to reach new collectors, venues, and collaborators.

Our Approach

The Scribe removes these barriers by providing:

  • Free publication with professional layout and photography
  • Physical distribution to 200+ libraries, galleries, and cafes
  • Online editions accessible without paywalls
  • Recognition by the Library of Congress as culturally significant

History

The Scribe launched in March 2024 from Northwood, Ohio. Since then, we have published 24 monthly editions, featured 175 artists, and expanded distribution across Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus, and smaller Ohio communities.
