Biography

Thomas Worthington Whittredge was an American landscape painter associated with the Hudson River School and the Dusseldorf school of painting. Born near Springfield, Ohio, he began his career as a portrait painter in Cincinnati before traveling to Europe for a decade of study. He spent ten years in Dusseldorf and Rome before returning to the United States, where he accompanied General John Pope on expeditions into the American West. Whittredge served twice as president of the National Academy of Design.
