Pearl Zane Grey was born in Zanesville, the town founded by his maternal great-grandfather Ebenezer Zane. He earned a dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania on a baseball scholarship but turned to writing. His novel Riders of the Purple Sage (1912) became a bestseller, and over 130 million copies of his books have been printed worldwide. His novels were adapted into 112 films, making him one of the most widely read authors in American history.
