JADAMS Custom Shoes

Custom shoe artist Jefferi Adams runs "JADAM- SCUSTOMS" out of Toledo Ohio. An online custom shoe design service, Jefferi and I talked about his unique line of work and how he is able to make money in art. His custom shoes are one of a kind, and he prides himself on his careful attention to detail and creative designs. To order your own pair, check out Jefferi's web- site, listed in this interview, and also on the page 7 Marketplace. When did you start doing these shoe designs? What in- spired you?

I've been customizing shoes since 2017. I always had a tal- ent for drawing. I've always had such love for shoes and one day I had the idea to start drawing on shoes so I googled it and a whole world opened up! People were already doing it. How do you come up with your next design?

My ideas come after I have consolation with my clients. They generally give me an idea of what they want but leave the creativity to me. How do you pick which shoe brand to use? Which brand is your favorite?

I can customize just about any kind of shoe but the most poplar shoe I've gotten is the Iconic Nike air force 1. I be- lieve people prefer this shoe because of its availability and wide leather panel that gives me plenty of space to create. How long does it take you from start to finish for one design?

I do have a two week turn around. These shoes are spe- cial wearable art and must be done right. Proper preparation is total necessity and takes time to assure the paint properly adheres to the shoe to prevent cracks. I may quote a two week period but most of the time the shoes are returned to the cus- tomer in about a weeks time. Do you take commissions?

Indie Band Spotlight: Tree3

This month’s Indie Band Spotlight is dedicated to a duo called Tree3. I met this band at a local Perrysburg Farmer’s Market. Each Thursday, they perform in the same spot, making it easy to catch them. Composed of well-known Toledo guitarist John Barile, and jazz vocalist Caroline McGuckin, Tree3 has certainly carved a path to recognition. Barile has shared the stage with a number of special guests, including: Jethro Tull, Santana, Allman Brothers, Keb mo, Hot tuna, Sam bush band, Foreigner, Widespread panic, Eka mouse, to name a few. Together, Tree3 opened for Scotty McCreery and played with numerous local artists.

I interviewed Caroline to learn more about the band and how it came to be.

How did you come up with Tree3? What does it mean?

To sum it up, Tree(3) is the longest possible length of a sequence where patterns do not repeat. It is the largest finite number and no one knows how many digits it actually has. John and I are both into science and astronomy and thought it would make a suitable band name. Another explanation we came up with over time, to shorten the explanation and meaning, is that the number three represents me, John, and the music.

How long has the band been together?

Tree3 has been together since March 2023. We met through my voice coach, Sarah Buchanan, after she set us up to play Christmas tunes at the restaurant she manages, Barr’s Public House. After we quickly practiced and learned more songs together, eventually creating Tree3. One of our first gigs was playing at the Village Idiot during the Acoustics for Autism event in 2023, which we also did this year.

What genre(s) do you play mostly?

John and I play a variety of genres including jazz, rock, pop, country, and alternative. John’s favorite genres to perform are classical music, such as Bach, and blue-grass. My favorite genres to perform are jazz and alternative rock. Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Amy Winehouse, and Laughey are my biggest inspirations. Tree3 often covers songs by these women.

Are you performing anywhere in the near future that readers can attend?

Yes, our website tree3band.com will display our upcoming schedule, as well as can also be found on our website. In August, Tree3 is at Charlie’s restaurant in Maumee for brunch every Sunday from 10 to 1 pm. We are also at the Perrysburg Farmer’s Market every Thursday in front of The Rose and Thistle. August 10th, we are looking forward to playing at the grand opening for Adventus Distillery. Lastly, on the 4th Saturday of every month we are at Te’kela in Sylvania.

Emerging Artist: Mierra “Lunabunneh” Nelson

Featured on the front page with fanart of the Egyptian Goddess Seshat, Lunabunneh is another Toledo artist who has a very distinct style. Mierra Nelson, who goes by “Lunabunneh” online, is a self-taught artist who was born in Detroit Michigan. Drawing inspiration from anime and video games, Mierra has created her own unique characters and artistic flair. Drawing was a therapeutic outlet for her during times of hardship.

Mierra’s main set of characters are known as Foodiez and Drinkiez. By drawing personified characters of popular foods and also their brands, Mierra soon quickly created her own set of stylish characters. Personified characters range from candies, vegetables, fried chicken, gumbo, mac and cheese, to even specific brands, like Arizona Iced Tea. Mierra has nearly unlimited room to make more characters and continue to perfect her craft. It is worth noting that her art caters to teenagers and above.

Mierra’s goal is to become an official toy maker. With her fun characters and created brand Foodiez, it feels like it is almost guaranteed to succeed. Her prototype is a small, food-themed, dog plush named Tex, who is inspired by garlic bread. When she is able to launch her line of toys, you can be sure that you can buy one through The Scribe.

Mierra has been drawing for over ten years, and mainly works with digital art. She sells coloring books of her characters, commissions in her distinct style, magnets, keychains, and stickers! Mierra serves as an inspiration to aspiring artists in Toledo and beyond.

The Scribe commissioned some artwork of our mascot, Seshat, through Mierra. She was quick, creative, and fun to work with. Commissions range from $35-$50 for her “chibi” style of art, which you can see to the left, to $85-$120 for a full body drawing. There is also a mascot / brand option, where Mierra will help you design a mascot character for your business to use. These are not professional logos or business branding, as Mierra states.

This time I provided two QR codes, one for visiting Mierra’s online store to buy Foodiez merch, and another to visit her Linktree page, which contains her social media pages, and her art commission form.

Sacred Steel Music and History Museum

Sacred Strings Records Inc. was founded in 2009 by Del Ray and Kelli Grace to preserve the legacy of African American steel guitar players. It hosts an annual Sacred Strings Showcase Concert and established the Sacred Steel Music & History Museum in Toledo, OH. The organization, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, promotes and documents sacred steel music, an oral tradition passed down through generations without written manuscripts. They aim to protect this tradition from extinction by maintaining an extensive archive of recordings, interviews, and other materials.

The sacred steel tradition in Toledo began within the Church of the Living God, founded by Mary Lena Lewis Tate in 1903. In the 1940s, the Toledo congregation became a center for Hawaiian steel guitar music, producing notable musicians such as Clifford Warren and Angela Grace-Russell Troman Eason (1905-1949), a man from Philadelphia, PA is credited as the first musician to introduce the electric Hawaiian guitar into the House of God church around the 1930s. This distinct musical instrument inspired many other musicians as Troman or musician known as Bishop Lockley and his ministry. This ministry was named Gospel Feast Party, and included another important steel guitarist Willie Claude Eason. Willie was remembered as "The Father of Sacred Steel Music." Willie became a consummate performer and church musician playing a tremendous role in the formative years of the Keith dominion steel guitar tradition. He is responsible for placing the steel guitar in a position of central importance for his church service. These are just one of many important men and women that kept this sacred tradition alive for so long.

Just this year, the Sacred Steel Music & History Museum opened its doors in Toledo, Ohio. Now patrons may immerse themselves in the African American tradition of the Hawaiian steel guitar. Located in the historic Old West End, the museum features artifacts, biographies, and interviews showcasing 80 years of sacred steel music history. Also included is an archive with the largest repository of sacred steel recordings. It also serves as a performing arts event center, named the Harmony House Performing Arts Center (HHMPA). Named after the founder's first granddaughter, the HHMPA center focuses on wholesome entertainment that your family can enjoy. This includes, but is not limited to, poetry, comedy, or other verbal or musical arts. Available for rent are three guitars, a bass amp, keyboard, drum set, microphones, and a PA mixing board.

In another corner of the museum is a spot dedicated to the Toledo Quartet Musical Association. Organized in 1950, the group's rich legacy is preserved with photos, CDs, and albums from the group's past. The museum even set up a touchscreen computer containing the full audio and video performances by the group,

Hannah Zimmerman Art

Hannah Zimmerman is an artist and educator based in Cincinnati, Ohio. She earned her MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and a BFA and BS in Art Education from Miami University. I found Hannah on Instagram, where I found myself enjoying her near endless amount of artwork.

"My work engages with internalized expectations of conventional feminine roles as I consider my life in comparison to the women in my family and others around me. Using interior spaces and the traditional genre of still life, I am navigating generational history and individual experience in an ongoing exploration of identity through the lens of home. Working with objects from my domestic environment, an ever-evolving collection of plants, and the inclusion of previous artworks, I am constructing a visual space that reflects a rich and meaningful life guided by female independence from the perspective of a single, childfree woman in her thirties. Throughout my work as a whole, I am processing and responding to political discourse (such as the right to bodily autonomy), loss and loneliness and the emotional labor required of women in maintaining relationships, how I engage in alternative forms of caretaking and my thoughts surrounding the concept of motherhood."

Jillian Renee Art

Jillian Renee Siefert, originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana, relocated to Ohio in 2011 after earning her BA in Psychology from the University of Dayton. Art has been an intrinsic part of her life since childhood, evolving from doodles in school notebooks to a profound expression of healing and connection.

Drawing inspiration from vibrant colors, playful compositions, and unique perspectives, Jillian’s art celebrates the beauty of nature and the essence of home. She views art as a powerful healing modality, inviting viewers to experience the world through a childlike lens and embrace the full spectrum of life’s colors.

Primarily working with water-soluble mediums, Jillian continually explores new techniques and mediums to expand her creative repertoire. Her artistic vision is rooted in creating work that heals, fosters community, and celebrates the inherent beauty of existence.

Specializing in creating small paintings ranging from 1” to 5”, she believes that small-scale artwork possesses a unique intimacy, inviting viewers to pause and appreciate intricate details, much like we do when observing the world around us. These tiny treasures serve as reminders of home and cherished memories, celebrating life’s precious moments. Through her art, she aims to inspire others to find joy in the beauty of each fleeting moment.

In addition to her unique paintings, Jillian also offers greeting cards and stickers, as well as ‘Glacee Prints’, which are accurate, yet cost-effective, reproductions of paintings. These are thoughtful additions to Jillian’s goal of helping her viewers find joy and happiness!
