The Akron Art Museum, in collaboration with the Akron-Summit County Public Library, has launched a new initiative called “Akron Art Mail.” This project aims to connect community members with art and each other through a multi-faceted approach. The program includes the distribution of commissioned art postcards created by regional artists and writers, a public exhibition of community-submitted artwork, and the creation of an e-book catalog documenting the project.
This initiative is particularly relevant in the current climate, as it seeks to combat feelings of isolation by fostering authentic experiences and connections through art. The Museum commissioned fifteen visual artists and ten writers to produce postcard-sized works, which will be distributed through the library and various community partners across Akron. This effort also supports the local arts economy by providing a platform for artists.
Beyond the commissioned pieces, “Akron Art Mail” encourages community participation by providing blank cards for individuals to create their own artwork. These submissions will be displayed in an exhibition at the museum, which is set to run from October 15th to February 21st. The museum hopes to create an immersive experience by displaying these community creations throughout a gallery space, with the exhibition also being available online. The project aims to capture the spirit of the current moment, reflecting its challenges and possibilities.
