The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) is presenting a new exhibition titled Ann Hamilton: still and moving • the tactile image, which showcases the work of internationally renowned, Ohio-born artist Ann Hamilton. The exhibition, which opened on December 14, 2025, utilizes a handheld scanner to create monumental images of small-scale figurative ceramics and crèche figures from the CMA’s collection, many of which are rarely displayed. This multisensory experience explores the interplay of touch, sight, and language through photography, video, and sound.
Ann Hamilton, a prominent artist from Ohio, employs a unique process for this exhibition, transforming diminutive sculptures into visually striking photographic subjects. The exhibition, running through April 19, 2026, highlights Hamilton’s innovative approach to photography, featuring 14-foot-tall images generated by a scanner that required direct contact with the artwork. This technique imbues the static figures with a sense of movement and the passage of time, complemented by an auditory element of whistling sounds, adding another layer to the sensory engagement.
