The Akron Art Museum is remembering Dr. Mitchell D. Kahan, who passed away recently. Dr. Kahan served as the museum’s Director from 1986 to 2013, a tenure marked by significant growth and transformation. Following his retirement, he continued his involvement with the museum as an Honorary Trustee of the Board.

During his 26 years leading the institution, Dr. Kahan was instrumental in reshaping the Akron Art Museum’s identity and its impact on the region. He oversaw the successful completion of the museum’s major 2007 expansion, a project that enhanced its capacity and national profile. Furthermore, he was credited with strengthening the museum’s collection and endowment, including the establishment of four acquisition funds and a doubling of the collection’s size during his directorship. Dr. Kahan also fostered collaborations throughout Akron’s cultural community, positioning the museum as a central hub for creativity and engagement.

The museum has announced that a celebration of Dr. Kahan’s legacy will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Akron Art Museum.
