The Bowling Green Philharmonia, the student orchestra of Bowling Green State University’s College of Musical Arts, will release “The Composer’s Voice: Volume 10” on April 10, marking the 10th installment of its long-running album series dedicated to contemporary orchestral music. The release also coincides with the college’s 50th anniversary.
The album is a compilation of recording sessions from the New Music Festival between fall 2022 and 2024, released through Albany Records. The Philharmonia has issued recordings on professional labels since 1999, and conductor Emily Freeman Brown has led the ensemble for all 10 volumes. On March 30, Columbia University announced Brown as the 2026 recipient of its Alice M. Ditson Conductor’s Award, one of the most prestigious honors in American conducting.
The series prioritizes works that have not been previously recorded, often developed in close collaboration with the composers themselves. Brown described the practical and artistic value of the project for student musicians: “The way I look at it is, when a composer writes a piece, they’re creating a musical world that’s unique. It’s our job as performers, from the first rehearsal, to dig deep into the piece and what it’s about.” She noted that working directly with living composers helps younger musicians develop a deeper understanding of how music is created.
“I’m pretty sure we’re the only university orchestra in the country that has done a project like this,” Brown said of the extended discography. The Bowling Green Philharmonia’s recordings feature works by composers who are frequently active participants in the process, and several have said the ensemble’s interpretations surpassed those of the orchestras that premiered the pieces.
