The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown is presenting “Sacred Landmarks: A Photographic Tribute to Youngstown’s Churches and Immigrant Heritage,” a solo exhibition by photographer Lisa Frederick. The show documents the historic churches of Youngstown, Ohio, many of which were built by immigrant communities whose religious institutions became anchors of neighborhood identity.
Frederick’s photographs record the architectural character and cultural significance of these structures, including her work “The Window Into Heaven.” The exhibition connects the built environment of Youngstown’s sacred spaces to the broader history of immigration and community formation in the Mahoning Valley. The Butler Institute page for the exhibition was last updated March 25, 2026, with an opening date of Jan. 28, 2026, and the show running through April 25, 2026.
The Butler Institute of American Art, founded in 1919 and located in downtown Youngstown, is one of the country’s oldest museums dedicated exclusively to American art. Admission is free.
