The Cleveland Museum of Art opens two major exhibitions this month, headlining an April schedule that also includes a Grammy-winning early music ensemble, a Yemeni psych-rock performance, and an ecology-focused jazz concert.
On April 12, the museum opens Martin Puryear: Nexus, running through August 9, 2026. Billed as the most comprehensive retrospective of the American sculptor’s career in nearly two decades, the exhibition brings together sculptures, prints, and drawings spanning from the 1960s to the present, including works not publicly exhibited for decades. A second major exhibition, Epic of the Northwest Himalayas: Pahari Paintings, opens April 19 and runs through August 16. The show reunites 40 paintings from a dispersed series depicting the Hindu epic Ramayana, with three digital stations presenting more than 100 animated images drawn from multiple collections worldwide.
The museum’s April performance calendar opens April 10 with Apollo’s Fire presenting “O Jerusalem! Crossroad of Three Faiths,” featuring 26 artists from Jewish, Palestinian, Muslim, and Christian backgrounds performing on traditional Middle Eastern instruments. On April 15, Yemeni trio El Khat performs original Arabic psych-rock compositions using self-made instruments. Brooklyn-based composer Stephan Crump brings his sextet “Slow Water” to the museum on April 24, exploring themes of ecology and environment through jazz-influenced instrumental music. All concerts run from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
Family programming continues throughout the month with Children’s Saturday Studios focused on sculpture, Holy Week Tours, Sensory-Friendly Saturday on April 18, and Art in Bloom Garden Sculpture Tours on weekends. Continuing exhibitions include Manet & Morisot, on view through July 5, and Ann Hamilton: still and moving, closing April 19.
