The sixth annual Downtown Akron Sakura Festival took place Saturday, April 4, 2026, along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, drawing an estimated 5,000 to 8,000 visitors for a day of cultural programming honoring the Japanese Association of Northeast Ohio. The event celebrates the organization’s donation of 472 cherry blossom trees to Akron more than a decade ago.
Festival activities spread across multiple downtown locations, including Lock 2, Lock 3, the Towpath Trail near Spaghetti Warehouse, the Mustill Store Museum, and James R. Williams Tower. Programming included food and retail vendors, live music and cultural dance performances, tea and sake tastings, ikebana demonstrations, bonsai displays, horticulturist walks, guided painting, and story and history walks. J-Art Band headlined the evening at Lock 3’s Maynard Performance Pavilion.
The event was supported by the Knight Foundation, Ohio Arts Council, City of Akron, GAR Foundation, and Akron Community Foundation, with community partners including the Japanese Association of Northeast Ohio and Asian Services in Action. A companion Sakura Photo Contest ran on social media from March 22 through April 17, 2026, with prizes for the top three entries.
