The Sculpture Center in Cleveland presented Surface & Structure: Contemporary Ceramics on the Edge of Form, an exhibition of work by eight ceramic artists affiliated with regional universities, through March 28, 2026. The show at 12210 Euclid Ave. brought together artists from Kent State University, the University of Akron, and the Cleveland Institute of Art whose work moves well beyond conventional pottery.
Among the works on view: Philip Soucy’s three large vessels with striated surfaces that appear to arrest clay in mid-motion; Keenan O’Toole’s dense structural networks built from thick clay bars; and Kristen Cliffel’s Making Hard Things Soft, a giant pink hammer assembled from hundreds of individually fired ceramic flowers. Seth Nagelberg contributed mathematically precise pieces including the hexagonal Columnar and the sea-green Nautilus. Anna Kruse showed large-scale organic works, including Tending and A Momentary Leave | Forever. Peter Christian Johnson’s delicate white lattice structures drew comparisons to bridge trestles. Drew Ippoliti and Seuil Chung collaborated on playful abstractions, with Chung’s Nice to Meet You and Ippoliti’s Skidding from Delicate to Disastrous among the featured pieces.
Grace Chin, executive director of The Sculpture Center, described the participating artists as “definitely taking ceramics a step further than what most people think of.” The exhibition was free and open to the public Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.
