Cleveland Public Theatre has begun a $12 million renovation of its Gordon Square Theatre complex at 6415 Detroit Ave. in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. The project, underway as of April 2026, covers upgrades to the lobby, classrooms, an adjacent church and parish hall, and the building exterior. Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan said construction is fully underway: “Marous Brothers Construction is mobilized. Equipment is on site. We have the first of two building permits. It’s happening!”
The renovation is designed to raise the theatre’s visibility and strengthen its connection to the surrounding neighborhood. Cleveland Public Theatre is simultaneously hosting a series of free public tours — Open Home, Open House — running through May 14, 2026, allowing community members to walk through both existing and future spaces. Tours are scheduled for February 11, March 9, April 16, and May 14, with RSVP required. Guided visits include presentations about the renovation plans and meetings with project leaders including Bobgan and Director of Development Melissa Waddell.
Cleveland Public Theatre, founded in 1981, has operated the Gordon Square complex as a home for new work and community-centered productions. The $12 million capital project represents one of the most substantial investments in the organization’s history. RSVP information for remaining tours is available at cptonline.org or by contacting Jen Shepard at [email protected].
