The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown is presenting an exhibition of silkscreen prints and monoprints by artist Danny Simmons, on view from May 3 through July 26, 2026. The works were produced in collaboration with master printmaker Gary Lichtenstein and include 30 silkscreen prints alongside a suite of original monoprints, many hand-embellished with textiles and fabric.

Simmons, a founder of Neo-African Abstract Expressionism, draws on African visual traditions — incorporating dots, tribal markings, and textile patterns — to reclaim African motifs within a modernist framework. His practice spans more than four decades and encompasses writing, poetry, philanthropy, and curatorial work in addition to visual art. “The printing process acts as a mirror, with every layer of ink informing original artistic decisions,” Simmons said of the collaborative silkscreen work on display.

Simmons is also a co-founder of Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, which operates Rush Arts Gallery locations in New York and Philadelphia and has supported emerging artists of color since 1995. An opening reception was held May 3 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Segall Gallery, with a gallery talk at 2 p.m. Admission to the Butler Institute is free. The museum is located at 524 Wick Avenue in Youngstown.
