Dobama Theatre in Cleveland will present the Cleveland premiere of Sanctuary City, a play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok, running April 23 through May 17, 2026. The production is directed by Dobama Artistic Director Nathan Motta and features a cast of Lloyd Wayne Taylor, Diwe Augustin-Glave, and Jacob Gonzalez.
Set in Newark, New Jersey in the months following September 11, 2001, Sanctuary City follows two teenagers — brought to the United States as children — as they navigate an uncertain future amid shifting immigration policies and the complications of early adulthood. Majok’s script, which was cited among the top ten plays produced in the United States in 2024, examines how young undocumented people weigh legal vulnerability against questions of belonging and identity. The Polish-American playwright previously received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Cost of Living.
Dobama’s production is connected to the theater’s Full Circle Program, which partners with local advocacy and legal organizations: ACLU Ohio, Cleveland Heights for Immigrant Rights, Esperanza Inc., and immigration law firm Margaret W. Wong & Associates. Post-show talkbacks featuring representatives from those organizations are scheduled for May 2, 9, and 16. Ticket and schedule information is available at dobamatheatre.org.
