The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra has named Erik Ochsner as its new Music Director. Ochsner made his debut with the orchestra on January 25 at Stambaugh Auditorium with a program titled “Fantastique!” that included works reflecting his background and musical influences.
The concert opened with an excerpt from Wagner’s “Twilight of the Gods,” followed by Sibelius’s “Night Ride and Sunrise” in a nod to Ochsner’s Finnish maternal heritage. The program also featured John Williams compositions, including the “Olympic Fanfare” and “Adventures on Earth” from E.T., acknowledging Ochsner’s experience conducting film scores. The concert closed with Berlioz’s “Symphonie fantastique,” performed with a bell from an 1894 Youngstown school building.
