The Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) and the Columbus Museum of Art have announced April Sunami as the recipient of the 2026 Aminah Robinson Artist Fellowship. Beginning January 1, 2026, Sunami will undertake a three-month residency in Aminah Robinson’s restored home studio in the Shepard neighborhood.

The fellowship includes an unrestricted $15,000 cash award and a community outreach project with the Columbus Museum of Art. During her residency, Sunami plans to create three large-scale mixed media pieces honoring Yoruba goddesses, exploring themes of the divine feminine, resilience, and transformation through various materials. The fellowship aims to support African American artists in Franklin County, continuing Robinson’s legacy of preserving community, culture, and history in Columbus.

April Sunami is a Columbus-based multimedia artist known for her work focusing on Black women and themes of race, identity, and representation. The Aminah Robinson Legacy Project, established by the Columbus Museum of Art, supports African American artists and writers through residencies and fellowships, furthering Robinson’s dedication to fostering creativity and cultural preservation.
