The Akron Art Museum is set to present “The Soul of Philanthropy Akron,” a touring exhibition that re-examines giving as a cultural force. Opening in the museum’s lobby, the exhibition will be free and open to the public from November 15, 2025, through February 14, 2026.
Drawing inspiration from Valaida Fullwood’s book “Giving Back: A Tribute to Generations of African American Philanthropists,” the exhibit showcases stories of generosity, particularly within Black communities. In conjunction with the exhibition, the “Soul of Philanthropy Akron Awards” will honor eight local individuals and organizations for their contributions to Summit County, highlighting philanthropy as an act of mentorship, advocacy, creativity, and service.
The exhibition aims to connect art with community experiences and foster generosity and civic engagement. “The Soul of Philanthropy Akron” is made possible by the Akron Community Foundation’s Black Giving Collective Fund, with the goal of building an endowment for the benefit of the Black community in Summit County. Support for the exhibition is also provided by several foundations and corporations, including the John and James L. Knight Foundation and The Lehner Family Foundation.
