The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) is presenting two new exhibitions, “A New York Minute: Street Photography, 1920–1950” and “Ashcan School Prints and the American City, 1900–1940.” Both exhibitions delve into the vibrant and evolving urban landscape of New York City during the first half of the 20th century, showcasing the city’s demographic, social, and economic transformations through art.
“A New York Minute” features photographs from the museum’s collection, many displayed for the first time, capturing spontaneous moments of everyday life and the struggles and triumphs of ordinary New Yorkers. Concurrently, “Ashcan School Prints and the American City” highlights prints from urban realists who depicted city life, moving from candid portrayals of urban activities to more reflective commentary on social dynamics and economic stratification in later works.
