Opera Columbus has announced the appointment of Julia Noulin-Mérat as its new General Director and CEO, effective January 25, 2021. Noulin-Mérat brings nearly two decades of experience in the opera and performing arts industries, having previously served in producer, designer, and arts administrator roles with organizations such as Boston Lyric Opera, Guerilla Opera, Atlanta Opera, and Opera Omaha. She also has international experience as a production designer and producer in Asia.
The appointment comes as Opera Columbus seeks to redefine regional opera with innovative productions and broader audience engagement, aligning with the company’s slogan, “Make It Yours.” Noulin-Mérat’s expertise in audience experience and her commitment to telling stories of historically silenced communities were highlighted as key reasons for her selection. Board president Bill Miller expressed confidence that her artistic and management skills will further the company’s mission.
Marc Scorca, President and CEO of OPERA America, praised Noulin-Mérat’s skillset and described her as an “arts entrepreneur.” Noulin-Mérat will succeed Peggy Kriha Dye, who departed the position in October. Opera Columbus is currently supported by various arts councils and foundations for its 2020-2021 season.
