Ambrose Bierce was born in a log cabin in Meigs County, Ohio, the tenth of thirteen children. He enlisted in the 9th Indiana Volunteers in 1861 and fought in major Civil War battles including Shiloh and Chickamauga. He became one of the most influential American journalists and a pioneering writer of realist fiction. His Devil’s Dictionary and stories like An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge remain widely read. He disappeared in Mexico in late 1913 or early 1914, and his fate remains unknown.
