Born Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff in Cincinnati to a music teacher father, Day originally trained as a dancer before a car accident at age fifteen ended those plans. While recovering, she discovered her singing talent. She achieved commercial success as a big band singer with Les Brown, scoring a No. 1 hit with Sentimental Journey in 1945. She became one of Hollywood’s biggest box-office stars, appearing in films like Pillow Talk (1959) and Calamity Jane (1953). Her recording of Que Sera, Sera became her signature song.
