Hart Crane was born in Garrettsville, Ohio, and moved to Cleveland at age ten, where he began writing poetry as a teenager. His father, a candy manufacturer, invented Life Savers candy. Crane published his first poem at sixteen while attending East High School in Cleveland. His major works include White Buildings (1926) and the epic poem The Bridge (1930), inspired by the Brooklyn Bridge. He is considered one of the most important American poets of the early 20th century.
