Biography

Howard Chandler Christy grew up along the Muskingum River in southeastern Ohio and studied at the Art Students League under William Merritt Chase. He first gained attention as a combat artist during the Spanish-American War and became famous for creating the Christy Girl, an idealized image of the modern American woman. He painted iconic World War I recruitment posters, and his 1940 painting Scene at the Signing of the Constitution hangs in the United States Capitol.
