James Thurber was born and raised in Columbus and attended Ohio State University, where he wrote for the campus newspaper and edited the humor magazine The Sun-Dial. He joined The New Yorker in 1927 and became one of the foremost American humorists of the 20th century, producing short stories, cartoons, fables, and plays. His works include The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and My Life and Hard Times. His boyhood home in Columbus is now the Thurber House literary center and museum.
