Great Lakes Theater has announced its 2026-27 season, a six-production lineup marking the Cleveland company’s 65th anniversary. Producing Artistic Director Sara Bruner revealed the slate, which runs from September 2026 through May 2027 at Playhouse Square’s Hanna Theatre and Mimi Ohio Theatre.
The season opens with Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale (September 25–October 11, 2026), presented in a modern verse translation by Tracy Young through the theater’s partnership with Play On Shakespeare. It is followed by Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (October 23–November 8), the annual return of A Christmas Carol for its 38th year at the Mimi Ohio Theatre (November 27–December 20), and The Comedy of Errors in a Play On Shakespeare translation by Christina Anderson (February 5–21, 2027). The season closes with the Tony Award-winning musical Les Misérables, presented by arrangement with Cameron Mackintosh (March 12–April 4, 2027), and Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest (April 23–May 9, 2027).
Five of the six productions will be staged in the 550-seat Hanna Theatre, where no seat is more than 13 rows from the stage. The theater offers pre-show programming for all productions, including Director’s Night conversations with Bruner, weekly Salon Thursdays with GLT artists, and Saturday matinee Playnotes discussions with guest scholars.
