Cleveland Play House will present the world premiere of Freak the Mighty as a co-production with Seattle Repertory Theatre, running May 22 through June 21, 2026, in the Allen Theatre at Playhouse Square. The musical, based on Rodman Philbrick’s novel, features book and lyrics by Olivier and Tony Award winner Anthony Drewe, known for Mary Poppins, and music by composer Ryan Fielding Garrett, a Baldwin Wallace University alumnus.

The story follows two unlikely friends — Maxwell Kane and Kevin “Freak” Avery — as they form a partnership to face the world together, with themes centering on friendship, resilience, and community. Michael Barakiva directs, with choreography by Patrick McCollum. The cast includes Netza Jimenez, Cornelius Kittrell, Spencer LaRue, and Wade McCollum, among others.

Managing Director Rachel L. Fink said the production is “exactly the kind of new, ambitious work that defines Cleveland Play House.” Director Barakiva described the show as “a story about healing, found family, and seeing strength where the world expects weakness.” The Allen Theatre is located at 1407 Euclid Avenue in Cleveland.
