The Akron Art Museum will present “Kent Monkman: History Is Painted by the Victors,” a mid-career survey of the renowned Cree artist, from April 11 through August 17, 2026. Akron is the only Midwest venue on the exhibition’s tour, which was organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Denver Art Museum.
Monkman’s paintings, video installations, and large-scale canvases examine how histories of Indigenous and queer communities have been marginalized or excluded from dominant cultural narratives. The exhibition addresses colonial histories, government policies affecting Indigenous peoples, intergenerational trauma, and the climate crisis, while also celebrating Two-Spirit and queer Indigenous experiences. Works in the show include loans from major institutions, among them the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
To coincide with the opening, the museum hosted a free public artist conversation on April 10 at the Akron-Summit County Public Library Main Branch from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., followed by an opening celebration at the museum. The Akron Art Museum is located at 1 S. High St. in downtown Akron and is open Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m., with extended Thursday hours until 9 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults; admission is free on Thursdays and for visitors 17 and under.
