The Sculpture Center in Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood is presenting a new ceramics exhibition featuring seven artists whose work extends contemporary ceramics beyond conventional approaches to the medium. The show brings together Grace Chin, Keenan O’Toole, Kristen Cliffel, Peter Christian Johnson, Philip Soucy, Seth Nagelberg, and Seuil Chung, drawing from faculty and alumni connected to three Northeast Ohio art schools: the Cleveland Institute of Art, Kent State University, and the University of Akron.
Writing in The Land, critic Zachary Lewis described the work as “nothing short of virtuosic,” noting the exhibition “defies convention as well as gravity.” The seven artists employ a range of approaches — from large-scale sculptural forms to precision vessel work — unified by a shared interest in pushing the physical and conceptual limits of fired clay. The exhibition is part of the Sculpture Center’s ongoing mission to support artists working in three-dimensional forms across multiple materials and disciplines.
The Sculpture Center, located at its current University Circle address, is open Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free. More information is available at sculpturecenter.org.
