The Cincinnati Art Museum received a $36,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts through its Grants for Arts Projects program to support the exhibition “Paintings, Politics and the Monuments Men: The Berlin Masterpieces in America,” which ran July 9 through October 3, 2021.
The exhibition traced the journey of 200 European paintings from the Berlin State Museums that were transferred to the United States after World War II and toured 14 American museums before returning to Germany. Captain Walter Farmer, a Cincinnatian, led the Monuments Men’s protest against the controversial transfer. The show featured paintings from the original tour alongside historical material from the Cincinnati Art Museum and other lenders.
The NEA grant was part of a round that selected more than 1,100 projects totaling nearly $27 million in fiscal year 2021 funding.
