The Cincinnati Art Museum will host the Midwest premiere of a newly restored version of the 1980 film ‘Tell Me A Riddle’ on Thursday, February 9, 2023. The screening, which is free and open to the public, is a collaboration between the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Mayerson JCC Jewish & Israeli Film Festival, and Women in Film Cincinnati. This restoration, completed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, saves the film from deterioration and provides a new digital master.

‘Tell Me A Riddle,’ directed by Lee Grant and based on Tillie Olsen’s novella, stars Melvyn Douglas and Lila Kedrova as an elderly Russian-Jewish immigrant couple facing intense marital conflict at the end of their lives. The film follows Eva and David as they travel to visit their family, with Eva reflecting on her life and the challenges she faced. The movie is described as a celebration of life and love’s power of renewal.

Following the screening, producer Rachel Lyon, who worked with director Lee Grant on the restoration, will lead a discussion about the film’s history and its significance for women in filmmaking. The discussion will be moderated by Jaime Meyers Schlenck, President of Women in Film Cincinnati. More information about attending the event can be found at cincinnatiartmuseum.org/movingimages.
