The Akron Art Museum presented “Myrlande Constant: DRAPO,” an exhibition of hand-embroidered textile works by one of Haiti’s most prominent contemporary artists, on view from August 9, 2025, through January 4, 2026. Constant’s works, sewn entirely by hand with sequins, beads and fabric, draw from the tradition of drapo Vodou, ceremonial flags used in Haitian spiritual practice.
The centerpiece of the exhibition was “Sosyete Radha,” a recent major acquisition by the museum measuring nearly nine feet wide and eight feet tall. The work honors a Vodou society emphasizing emotional warmth, stability and spiritual protection. Created in 2024 during a period of social and political turmoil in Haiti, the piece reflects themes of hope and resilience.
Constant became the first woman leader within the drapo art form in the early 2000s, introducing more complex compositions and a collaborative studio model that has launched the careers of fellow Haitian artists. “I am delighted that our community in Akron will have a chance to experience Myrlande Constant’s dazzling artwork,” said Senior Curator Jeffrey Katzin.
