Cincinnati Opera launched Underscore, a new event series running March through May 2026 that approaches opera from unexpected angles. Announced February 4, 2026, the series invites audiences to explore the stories and ideas behind the company’s 2026 Summer Festival operas through theatrical investigations, topical discussions, and character explorations.
The inaugural series includes “The Importance of Being Oscar,” a nearly-true story of Oscar Wilde’s first visit to Cincinnati on March 3, and additional events through May connecting audiences to the upcoming productions of Salome, Lalovavi, Orpheus, and Carmen.
“From theatrical investigations to topical discussions to lively character explorations, attendees will discover the unexpected connections and relatable moments that make opera resonate,” the company stated. Underscore represents Cincinnati Opera’s expanded approach to audience engagement beyond its traditional summer festival format.
