Shalom Auslander’s memoir “Feh” received the 2026 James Thurber Prize for American Humor in writing, Thurber House announced. The award ceremony took place May 7 in Columbus.

Emily Flake received the prize in the cartoon art category.

The other writing finalists were Alison Espach for “The Wedding People” and Steven Rowley for “The Guncle Abroad.”

Auslander, raised in Monsey, New York, has published in Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, and The New Yorker. His stories have aired on NPR’s “This American Life.” Previous books include the short story collection “Beware of God,” the memoir “Foreskin’s Lament,” and the novel “Hope: A Tragedy.” He also created the Showtime series “Happyish.”

The Thurber Prize is administered by Thurber House, a nonprofit literary center and James Thurber museum in Columbus. The organization describes the award as one of the highest recognitions of humor writing and cartooning in the United States.
