The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown will open its 89th National Midyear Exhibition on July 12. The juried show runs through August 20 in the MacIntosh and Finnegan-Hynes Galleries.

The exhibition accepts work by artists 18 and older residing in the United States and its territories. Eligible media include painting, works on paper, photography, and wall-mounted sculptural relief. The museum describes the Midyear as one of the country’s longest-running juried exhibitions, held annually for more than eight decades.

Dr. Louis A. Zona, Director Emeritus of the Butler Institute, is serving as juror for the 89th edition. Zona led the museum for more than four decades as Executive Director and Chief Curator.

This year the museum is reviving its tradition of invited artists, with the Midyear Committee selecting up to five professional artists to appear alongside the juried work. The committee, composed of Butler staff and board members, also oversees the jurying and award process.

An opening reception will be held July 12 from 1 to 3 p.m., with an awards presentation at 2 p.m.
