Cleveland Public Theatre has announced its 44th season, “Luminous,” featuring five world premieres and a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere. Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan programmed the season around themes including the meaning of Black excellence, healing through grief, and reclaiming of Indigenous land.
The season opens in October with two productions: a world premiere by Masrah Cleveland Al-Arabi, the theatre’s Arabic-language community ensemble, and “The End of Black Excellence” by Chris Webb, which was first workshopped through CPT’s SoftLaunch development program. Amy Schwabauer’s autobiographical dark comedy “I Wear My Dead Sister’s Clothes” runs in December. In March, Tara Moses’ “Haunted,” an Indigenous horror comedy, receives its National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere.
The season also includes Bobgan’s “Into the Heart of One Star,” a dual-performer work with contributions from Anastásia Urozhaeva, and a Spanish-language production of Karen Zacarías’ “Native Gardens” presented by Teatro Público de Cleveland. The theatre’s second year of SoftLaunch, its new-work development series, continues alongside programming supported through the Mellon Foundation’s Future of American Theatre Cohort.
