The Cleveland Museum of Art opened “Renaissance to Runway,” an exhibition pairing Italian Renaissance and Baroque artworks from the CMA’s collection with approximately 80 ensembles and 40 jewelry pieces from Italian fashion houses including Fortuny, Pucci, Gucci, Armani, Versace, Valentino, Bvlgari, and others.

The exhibition examines how Italian family dynasties such as the Medici of Florence and the Sforza of Milan used dress as political influence, and how contemporary Italian fashion houses have drawn on that heritage. Darnell-Jamal Lisby, associate curator of fashion at the CMA, said it is his hope “that visitors recognize how fashion is a conduit for understanding respective cultures across time.”
