SPACES, the nonprofit alternative art organization at 2900 Detroit Avenue in Cleveland, will present Everlasting Plastics, a group exhibition that originated at the U.S. Pavilion of the 2023 Venice Biennale of Architecture and later traveled to the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh in 2024. The show opens with a public reception on Friday, September 26, 2025, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., and runs through January 17, 2026.
The exhibition brings together five artists and designers: Xavi L. Aguirre, an assistant professor of architecture at MIT; Simon Anton, a Detroit-based designer; Ang Li, an assistant professor at Northeastern University School of Architecture; Norman Teague, an assistant professor in the School of Design at the University of Illinois at Chicago; and Lauren Yeager, a Cleveland-based sculptor. The works examine the role of plastic in contemporary ecology, economy, and the built environment. The exhibition is co-curated by Tizziana Baldenebro, executive director of the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation; Lauren Leving, a Chicago-based independent curator; and assistant curator Paula Volpato. The Cleveland presentation is organized by SPACES curatorial coordinator Thea Spittle.
The press release notes that Ohio is the second-largest employer in the plastics industry nationally, and that Cleveland’s location on the Lake Erie watershed makes plastic detritus a regional concern. A fundraiser tied to the exhibition, “A Plastic Homecoming,” is scheduled for November 1, 2025, from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. Since 1978, SPACES has commissioned and presented projects by artists-in-residence working across all media.
