The Cincinnati Art Museum (CAM) will present “The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century,” a multimedia exhibition exploring the enduring influence of hip hop on art and fashion. The exhibition will feature over 100 works by prominent artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roberto Lugo, and Carrie Mae Weems, alongside fashion from brands like Cross Colours and Vivienne Westwood. Music ephemera will also be on display, offering a comprehensive look at hip hop’s cultural impact.

Co-curated by a team of museum professionals and site-curated by hip hop scholar Dr. Jason Rawls, the exhibition delves into hip hop’s origins as a cultural expression of Black, Latinx, and Afro-Latinx youth in the 1970s. “The Culture” examines how hip hop has transformed contemporary art, material culture, technology, and the marketplace. This exhibition is organized by the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Saint Louis Art Museum and is supported by various foundations and corporate sponsors.

“The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century” will be on view from June 28 to September 29, 2024, in the Western & Southern Galleries. Tickets are $12, with discounts available for students, children, and seniors, and a $2 saving for online purchases. CAM members receive free admission, and the museum offers free general admission every Thursday evening from 5–8 p.m. Additional related events, including a members’ opening, artist talk, and family day, are scheduled throughout the exhibition period.
