The Cincinnati Art Museum will present “Creating Connections: Self-Taught Artists in the Rosenthal Collection,” an exhibition showcasing nearly 40 works from the promised gift of Richard “Dick” Rosenthal and his family. Opening June 9 and running through October 8, 2023, the exhibition will feature a diverse range of art, including drawings, watercolors, paintings, sculpture, and needlework, created by self-taught artists from various cultural backgrounds and circumstances. These artists utilized unconventional and repurposed materials, challenging traditional notions of art-making.

The exhibition draws from the extensive collection built by Dick Rosenthal and his late wife, Lois, over three decades. Featured artists include renowned figures such as Jean Dubuffet, Bill Traylor, Nellie Mae Rowe, and Thornton Dial, among many others. “Creating Connections” aims to expand the art historical narrative by celebrating the visibility, self-determination, and shared humanity fostered by self-taught artists, according to Dr. Julie Aronson, the exhibition’s curator.

Located in the Thomas R. Schiff Galleries, the exhibition will also be accompanied by a display of work from Cincinnati’s Visionaries and Voices program. Admission to the Cincinnati Art Museum, including this exhibition, is free. The museum encourages visitors to use the hashtag #RosenthalCollection on social media. A preview for museum members is scheduled for Thursday, June 8.
