The Canton Museum of Art opened four winter exhibitions on November 26, 2024, on view through March 2, 2025. The featured show, “Bohemian Chrysalis,” traces the history of the Kokoon Klub, an early 20th-century Cleveland arts club that helped introduce modern art to the region.

The Kokoon Arts Klub was founded in 1911 by artists from the Otis Lithograph Company, with Carl Moellmann as president and William Sommer as vice president. The club encouraged interest in modern European art movements and was known for its annual Bal Masque costume celebrations, which grew from hundreds of attendees to thousands by the late 1920s. The club declined during the Great Depression and held its last Bal Masque in 1946.

The exhibition draws from the Canton Museum’s collection and collaborations with the Cleveland History Center, Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Public Library, Kent State University, and private collections.

The three other winter exhibitions were “Night Visions: Nocturnes in American Art” from the museum’s collection, “Arriving Somewhere, But Not Here” by Kit Palencar, and “El Albañil” with printmaking by J. Leigh Garcia.
