Dan Denhart, professor and head of the Technical Direction program at Ohio University’s School of Theater, is retiring after 42 years. Denhart served as teacher, technical director, administrator and interim director during his tenure, contributing to nearly every production staged by the school.

His work included securing grants to bring stage automation technology, rigging and welding equipment into the program. He also served four consecutive terms as vice president of special operations for the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, where he helped oversee the 2005 World Stage Design Exhibition in Toronto and served as producing director for the U.S. design entry in the 2011 Prague Quadrennial. “Service to these allowed me to involve my students in the execution of high-profile events, adding invaluable learning and portfolio development opportunities separate from the classroom,” Denhart said.

As the School of Theater prepares to move into the Patton Center for Arts Education, Denhart provided guidance for the design of the new scene shop. Merri Biechler, director of the School of Theater, said his expertise was central to the facility plans. “Every single student who has come through the School of Theater has been impacted by Dan,” Biechler said. Denhart and his family plan to remain in Athens.
